Larry Johnson signs with Washington Redskins

WASHINGTON (MAR. 12, 2010)

The Redskins have signed running back Larry Johnson to join Clinton Portis in the Redskins’ backfield, a league source confirmed. Johnson would give the Redskins a strong runner in the backfield to complement Portis, who’s expected to begin the season as Redskins’ starter.

“We are excited to bring in a running back that has had so much success in this league,” Coach Mike Shanahan said in the release. “Larry is a physical runner who will be a great addition to our backfield.”

His last 1,000-yard season was 2006, when he rushed for a career-high 1,789 yards and had 17 touchdowns.

“There hasn’t been a real good running back tandem in the league [for a while],” Johnson told ESPN 980 on Thursday night. “There’s always been one guy or three guys. It’d be just like how me and Priest Holmes was way back in the day. It’d be nice to be able to play aside somebody like that.”

While Johnson, 30, had complimentary things to say about Shanahan, the Redskins’ coach left few doubts about his feelings for Johnson.

“Obviously I’ve watched him from afar for years,” Shanahan said. “I coached Larry in the Pro Bowl. I like Larry. I’m a big fan of his.”

Johnson has had more than his share of off-the-field troubles. He lost his job in Kansas City after he was suspended twice within a 12-month period, following remarks he made on Twitter about Chiefs’ coaches and gay slurs he used to members of the media.
